Road Map to Holland: How I Found My Way Through My Son’s First Two Years With Down Syndrome by Jennifer Graf Groneberg

I was going to tell you all about this book that I started reading the day before yesterday and have hardly been able to put down except to get another tissue because I am crying again. And I was going to say how eloquent and captivating the story of this mom and her son is, and how you really should get your hands on a copy as soon as possible, but then I saw that Melody had just written about it and that I would just be attempting to repeat what she wrote so well.

So instead I am going to tell you about another book that I have enjoyed recently:

Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise by Ruth Reichl

This book is an account of Reichl’s experience as a food critic for the New York Times (she is currently Editor-in-Chief of Gourmet Magazine). As fascinating as it would have been simply to read about some of the amazing food and high-profile restaurants she reviewed while she was there, it was even more intriguing to watch as she created different disguises and even personalities in order to remain anonymous while she visited each place.

In the process, we get to experience how different types of people are treated by the staff at the various restaurants, as well as gain a glimpse into her personal life and what she learns about herself as the stories unfold. I am looking forward to reading more from both of these women.

OOh that Garlic and Saphires book sounds good. I will have to check that out. I am still reading The Elephant In The Playroom. It is taking me forever.
