Special Exposure Wednesday: Soccer Star

5 Minutes for Special Needs

One of the local soccer associations has a program for kids with special needs, and Michael is old enough this year to join in. Sunday was the first of six sessions, and he got to practice a bunch of different drills with his group. Each player has a buddy, who are mostly teenage soccer players. Michael’s buddy this week was Charlie.

It seems like a great program, and the first day went very well until the end, when each kid gets to shoot a goal against one of their parents. As soon as Michael realized this was coming, he became very upset and was yelling mean things and wanting to go home. Not sure how he will handle it when they actually play a game, but winning & losing is definitely a BIG issue for him right now. (Hmmm, maybe I need to write another social story.)

The concept of ‘team sports’ is still well out of our league.
Best wishes

He looks good out there. Maybe this will be a way of easing into the whole “competative” thing. Social story sounds like a good idea :0)

Well he looks like he’s having a ton of fun. I’m sure he’ll have a great time come game day. Just remind him of the great snacks that you get after the game. :)

First, great action shot.

Second, we’ve had our team sport challenges. With time and an understanding coach, most of them were resolved. We have, however, discovered that individual sports work so much better for us. TawKwonDo, swimming, golf, bike racing

This sounds like an excellent program.

Our school has a similar program that we’ll be eligible for next year. I don’t know if they actually play a game or just learn the skills. I can’t even imagine getting to that stage! That will be one heck of a social story! Great shot, though!
