What's On Your Nightstand

I have been reading a lot this month (more than usual, anyway) and thought I would just list a few of the books that have come across my bedside table:

  • The Other Side of Darkness, a fascinating novel by Melody Carlson in which she tackles two difficult subjects – Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and cults. A disturbing but interesting read.
  • Another novel, The Almost True Story of Ryan Fisher by Rob Stennet, is a quirky look at modern megachurches.
  • On the nonfiction side, there’s The Waiter Rant by the Waiter, an insider look at working in food service in America. While I found this interesting, it definitely has its depressing side as well.
  • Within the last week, I picked up Jenny McCarthy’s new book Mother Warriors: A Nation of Mothers Healing Autism Against All Odds and devoured it within 24 hours. In it, she tells her story from when she started speaking out after writing her first book and also shares the stories of several different families who have seen biomedical interventions make a huge difference for their children. Very inspiring!

So that’s what sticks out in my mind from the last few weeks. If you have a suggestion for my November reading list, feel free to let me know in the comments!

I’ve just finished reading ‘born on a blue day’ by Daniel Tannet which I thoroughly enjoyed as I’m tryng to find about more about synesthesia as one of my daughters and one of my sons both see words, letters and numbers in colour.

Now I’ve just started ‘I,Richard’ by Elizabeth George as I love a good whodunnit and my brain and jaw hurt so I’m being kind to myself. I’d tell you all the other books on my nightstand, but it’s upstairs and I’m downstairs cooking, [can't leave the kids of the cooker!]
Cheers

One of my favorite reads (but not recently), was Jeanne McDermott’s book, Babyface
Her son was born with Apert syndrome, but the book is in general a view of how our society views and reacts to disability. This book was published by Woodbine house, but probably is out-of print. You’d haver to buy used or through the library.

Currently I’m reading Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie…I may be the only person not to have read it.

Some of my faves are classics like The Bell Jar, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Mrs. Dalloway. Also anything by Edith Wharton.

I love Paulo Coelho, Julia Alvarez, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Esmeralda Santiago as contemporary writers.

Yay for reading! Reading is fun!

The Ryan Fisher book’s on my booklist.
And, Spring, I haven’t read that Rushdie book yet either.

I was surfing, stumbled on your lovely blog and the nice compliment posting about my book Babyface. The book is out-of-print but available through Amazon. And the little baby Nathaniel is now 18 and heading off to college. Wonders never cease.
