I appreciate everyone’s comments here and on Shawnda’s post – this is something I’m definitely going to keep an eye on as my son gets older. I can see that I will have to continue to be very assertive and proactive each year to make sure that the school is doing everything they can and that we are also finding the proper place for him to learn and develop.

For two years I worked as an Inclusion teacher in a Middle School. Definitely, it’s harder and more demanding on the kids, but it’s also more real. I never hesitated to send a kid back to resource classes if I thought they couldn’t hang, but I’d rather them getting C’s in an inclusion setting. Honestly, LRE needs a LOT of tweaking, but I’ve seen that it works. Previously, I thought it was terrible idea.

Good morning. Thanks for the post, I really appreciate it. Another thought to think about is I personally feel that the older your kid gets the less “help” they seem to be getting through special education/IEP’s. (I think that is why most parents of young kids are still happy with the system, and the fact that the other kids in their classes are still so young the differences are not quite yet apparent to them.) The thing is, you never outgrow Asperger’s. As a matter of fact , kids can regress in the progress they make if that “rug of support” is suddenly pulled out from underneath them.
